The Human Services program prepares students for 2 pathways to employment. The first pathway to employment, allows students to prepare for employment as paraprofessionals in a wide variety of human service agencies. Graduates can be employed in agencies working with the intellectually disabled, mentally ill or elderly. Secondly, students completing the Human Services Program are prepared through articulation agreements to enter the Bachelor of Social Work program at James Madison University (JMU), Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), or Mary Baldwin University (MBU). As a social worker, students can work in mental health, corrections, substance abuse, health care and community service agencies. Students can attend classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and complete their AAS degree in 2 years. Successful completion of the program and employment may require a background check and controlled substance testing.

Purpose: The AAS in Human Services Degree Program prepares students as paraprofessionals in a wide variety of human service agencies. Graduates will be equipped for employment in agencies working with the intellectually disabled, mentally ill, substance abusers or elderly. As a social worker, students can work in mental health, corrections, substance abuse, health care and community service agencies. The AAS in Human Services also provides a strong foundation for students who intend to advance their education to the baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate level.

Substance Abuse Counseling

The Substance Abuse Counseling program will prepare students to work as an assistant with individuals who have alcohol and drug abuse and addition problems. The Substance Abuse Counseling program is designed to fulfill the Virginia state educational requirements for the certification of substance abuse counselor assistant; BRCC has not determined requirements for other states. To meet substance abuse counselor assistant certification requirements, the applicant is expected to meet specific educational requirements including didactic and experiential learning with a supervised internship required.
