HIM 199. Supervised Study. (3 Credits)
Assigns problems for independent study incorporating previous instruction and supervised by the instructor. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours per week.
HIM 253. Health Records Coding. (4 Credits)
Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered. Lecture 4 hours per week. Total 4 hours per week. Co-requisites: (HLT 143) and (BIO 145 or BIO 141)
HIM 254. Advanced Coding and Reimbursement. (4 Credits)
Focuses on the applications and evaluation of advanced coding skills through practical exercises using actual healthcare data; while examining the components of DRGs, APCs and APGs and other prospective payment in the healthcare environment. Utilizes current coding standards in identifying payment methodologies, revenue cycle management and reimbursement. Lecture 4 hours per week. Total 4 hours per week. Co-requisite or Prerequisite: HIM 253 and BIO 141 or BIO 145.
HIM 255. Health Data Classification Systems II: CPT. (3 Credits)
Focuses on procedure classification using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). This system is currently utilized for collecting health data for the purposes of statistical research and financial reporting. Lecture 3 hours per week. Total 3 hours per week.
