HIM 190. Coordinated Internship. (1 Credit)

Supervises on-the-job training in selected business, industrial or service firms coordinated by the college. Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. Variable hours per week. Laboratory 6 hours. Prerequisites: HLT 143, HLT 144, HIM 253, and HIM 254. Prerequisite or Co-requisite: BIO 142 or BIO 145.

HIM 253. Health Records Coding. (4 Credits)

Examines the development of coding classification systems. Introduces ICD-9-CM coding classification system, its format and conventions. Stresses basic coding steps and guidelines according to body systems. Provides actual coding exercises in relation to each system covered. Lecture 4 hours per week. Total 4 hours per week. Co-requisites: (HLT 143) (HLT 144) and (BIO 145 or BIO 141)

HIM 254. Advanced Coding and Reimbursement. (4 Credits)

Focuses on the applications and evaluation of advanced coding skills through practical exercises using actual healthcare data; while examining the components of DRGs, APCs and APGs and other prospective payment in the healthcare environment. Utilizes current coding standards in identifying payment methodologies, revenue cycle management and reimbursement. Lecture 4 hours per week. Total 4 hours per week. Co-requisite or Prerequisite: HIM 253 and BIO 141 or BIO 145.
